As per reports, the Mumbai police, BMC, Western Railway, and Central Railway have collected an amount of ₹45 lakh as fine from 22,976 no-mask violators in the city, on Monday.
Despite repeated appeals and a rise in COVID-19 cases, Mumbaikars do not seem to adhere to safety norms, including wearing masks.
BMC alone had collected a whopping amount of ₹60 lakh as fine, over the weekend. The officials said they are also making violators do community service like sweeping the road if they can’t pay the fine.
With a sharp rise in cases in the city, BMC has imposed stricter rules including a fine of ₹200 on those caught not wearing a mask. Monday onwards, police are also issuing challans to the mask-less.
Mumbai Metro One will also start imposing the ₹200 fine on violators. “Any commuter found flouting mask norms is first counselled. If the commuter still refuses to fall in line and doesn’t wear a mask, then they are fined under Section 59 of the Metro Railways Operations and Maintenance Act,” said a Mumbai Metro One Pvt Ltd official.
