Mucormycosis to be treated free of cost under health schemes: Maha govt to Bombay HC

Amid the coronavirus crisis, the country is now fighting Mucormycosis which is also known as the Black Fungus disease. However, now the treatment for Mucormycosis will be covered under the government health scheme.

As per reports, the MVA government informed the Aurangabad bench of Bombay HC that the disease will be covered under the Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Aarogya Yojana and the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana.

The state government stated that people will be able to avail free treatment for the fungal disease at pre-identified hospitals and nursing homes across Maharashtra under the above schemes.

Justices RV Ghuge and BU Debadwar represented the bench. The state government said that 130 hospitals around the state have been identified for the treatment of Mucormycosis. The state government further told the bench that citizens who do not have cards for the insurance schemes will be eligible for the treatment at these facilities free of cost.

The government further informed another 1,000 hospitals will be empanelled for the treatment of the fungal disease under the above schemes.

The state government also added that private hospitals will also be restrained from “raising astronomical bills”. It further told the court that the state government is working on capping the cost of treatment for mucormycosis at private hospitals in Maharashtra.

A Government Resolution (GR) issued on May 18 this year notified the above submissions, the state said.

Meanwhile, the bench accepted the state’s submissions and directed it to publicise the GR.

The Bombay High Court asked the hospitals enlisted for the treatment of mucormycosis to display instructions for public availability of beds and medicines to avoid confusion.

The Bombay High Court will continue its hearing on Tuesday (May 25, 2021).
