Women Empowerment: Tigist Eshetu becomes first woman to head Ethiopian Airlines as RD-India Sub Continent

Tigist Eshetu – Newly appointed RD India Sub Continent for Ethiopian Airlines

Tigist Eshetu will be stationed in Mumbai. Ethiopian’s first flight in India began in 1966 at Delhi. 

Tigist Eshetu has been appointed as the Regional Director (RD) India Sub Continent for Ethiopian Airlines with effect from December 23, 2019. She becomes the first woman to head India Sub Continent in the history of Ethiopian Airlines, right from its India operation in 1966. Ethiopian is Africa’s largest airline in terms of passengers carried, destinations served, fleet size and revenue. 

Prior to taking over her new assignment in Mumbai, she was working as Area Manager in Zambia. She has taken over charge from outgoing RD Tadesse Tilahun and will be stationed in Mumbai. Her appointment in India has come at a very challenging time for the airline.

Tigist comes with around two decades of experience in aviation industry. Her rich, varied and long-standing experience will be an opportunity towards elevating ET’s operation in the Indian Sub-Continent. She joined Ethiopian in year 2000 and never looked back thereafter. After commencement her job in Ethiopian on May 18, 2000, she served the Airline in various positions in Operations, Cargo, Manager Pricing and well versed with operations of the airlines.   

Educational Assets: Tigist is a highly qualified professional and has completed her Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Lincoln University, USA. She is a School of Marketing Graduate, has Diploma in Accounting from Addis Ababa Commercial College. She also a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Management and Public Administration from University of Addis Ababa. 

Speaking to Mumbai Messenger on her new role as Regional Director, India Sub Continent, she said “It is a very challenging assignment to head the India operation and I am excited to take up this new role. Our priority would be route expansion in terms of both cargo and passenger service. We will aggressively promote digitalization. We are superior in customer services but would try to further enhance it. Over all we will do more to maintain our competitive position”. 

She further added “We will also be spending the forthcoming years creating an awareness about Ethiopia. Our country has lot to offer to Indian travellers. We will conduct workshops, giving presentations and also educating the MICE traveller to make Ethiopia a business cum pleasure destination”. 

It may be noted that Ethiopian Airlines has witnessed rapid growth, network extension, upgrading level of services rendered to its valued customers. The airline has introduced New Generation Boeings, use of the state of art technology and programs that cope with the successive advancements in the airline industry. Currently, Ethiopian is the largest and fastest growing and the most profitable Airline in Africa, and one of few such airlines in the world.  Ethiopian is also the world’s 4th largest airline by the number of countries served and is also Winner of many prestigious awards.
