Those Mumbaikar, who are moving in city beware? The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Wednesday made it mandatory for Mumbaikars to wear masks in public places.

The BMC has also said that people violating the order would face arrest under Section 188 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). The order issued by BMC Commissioner Praveen Pardesi says that anyone who is found not using facemasks at public places will be punished.

“All persons moving out for whatever purpose and for whatever reason in public places like streets, hospitals, offices, markets etc must wear mask or cloth mask,” the BMC circular stated. while citing several studies that supported wearing masks can reduce the spread of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) outbreak.

It may be noted that Mumbai, accounts for nearly 73 per cent of the total cases in Maharashtra. Mumbai is one of the worst-affected cities in India due to the coronavirus outbreak. In Maharashtra, more than 1,000 people have tested positive for Covid-19, the disease caused by the novel coronavirus. Mumbai, accounts for nearly 73 per cent of the total cases in Maharashtra.

Relying upon some research studies that have found that wearing facial masks can reduce the spread of novel coronavirus substantially, the order said the BMC Commissioner has decided that making use of facemasks mandatory at public places is necessary in the larger public interest.

The order states that if anyone is at a public place (like a street, hospital, office, market etc), he/she must wear a facemask. “Any person who is moving around in his personal and official vehicle must also wear these masks,” the order states.

Besides this, the order states that no meeting/gathering will be allowed at any workplace if people are not wearing facemasks.

The punishment

Anybody found violating these instructions will be punishable under Section 188 of Indian Penal Code. The punishment may include a fine and even an arrest. Section 188 deals with disobedience of an order that has been duly promulgated by a public servant.
