Smuggled gold seized by Chennai Air Customs

Covid 19 pandemic has created havoc globally but the spirit of smugglers has not gone down. They are using various modus operandi to bring smuggled goods in India. But Indian customs are on very high alert to curb the smuggling activities. On Wednesday 23rd September, 2020 morning based on specific intelligence input, one passenger from Chennai who arrived from Dubai by Emirates Airlines flight EK544 was intercepted at the exit of Customs arrival hall.

On personal search two plastic pouches of gold paste were found stitched inside his underwear.  There was 412 grams of gold 24 k purity was recovered from him. The value of gold was Rs. 21.4 lakhs. He was in possession of one gold kada weighing 98 grams recovered from his trouser pocket which is valued at Rs. 5 lakhs.

On further investigation and search of his hand bag 5 drones and 2 iPhone 11 were also recovered and seized under Customs Act, 1962. The value of gold, drones & iPhones was Rs 32 lakhs. The passenger was arrested.

In another haul, On Tuesday, 22nd September, 2020, three passengers one from Virudhnagar (TN) and two from Kadappa (AP) who arrived from Doha and Kuwait by flights Indigo 6E 8713 and Kuwait Air KU 1343 were intercepted at exit.  On personal search of one passenger, one gold kada was recovered from his trouser pant pocket. One gold chain and one gold cut bit each were recovered from the pant pockets of two other passengers. Total 586 grams of gold valued at Rs. 30.6 lakhs was recovered and seized under Customs Act, 1962.

In totality Gold worth Rs. 57 lakhs along with drones & iPhones worth Rs. 5.6 lakhs, totally valued at Rs. 62.6 lakhs were recovered and seized under Customs Act, 1962. Further investigation is under process.
