It may be noted that once lavish affairs, Indian weddings have now become intimate events with focus on quality over quantity. It is a segment that pandemic-hit hotels are pinning their hopes on, praying for a revival in their fortunes as bookings witness a steady uptick especially with the government allowing up to 100 people to attend social gatherings under Unlock 4 guidelines. With no clarity on resumption of international tourism, destination wedding clients have also trained their eyes on domestic hotels. Wedding segments, on an average, contribute 10% to a hotel’s overall revenue.

Newly wedded couple

A seasoned hotelier on the condition of anonymity said “Demand has been rising as big weddings, with farmhouses and banquets as venues have been shifting to hotels as preferred venues. In Mumbai, Delhi, Banglore, Rajasthan and Agra properties have received several wedding bookings for the upcoming season starting next month. The number of bookings will be higher than 2019 but the number of pax will be lower and hence lower revenue.

In India Luxury and budget hotels which have big banqueting venues are counting on weddings to see them through in a pandemic-hit market. Though on a smaller scale, most hotels are seeing a recovery in bookings and enquiries for the forthcoming wedding season from October to December. They are also relying on couples who had earlier planned destination weddings but are now considering options within the country.

Most of the invitees for destination weddings have said no to fly to different cities and preferred to be a part of the wedding if it happens within the city. Many people have Most bookings at hotels for day-long ceremonies. People aren’t staying on longer, as in the past.
