Maharashtra Governor Ramesh Bais presided over the inauguration ceremony of the 25th Bharat Rang Mahotsav ‘Bharangam’ – the International Theatre Festival of India, organized by the National School of Drama at NCPA Mumbai.

Paresh Rawal, Chairman of National School of Drama, senior actor and Brand Ambassador of ‘Bharangam’ festival Pankaj Tripathi, senior actor Raghubir Yadav, Director of National School of Drama Chittaranjan Tripathi, eminent personalities from theatre, critics and alumni of NSD were present.

Mumbai is the theatre capital of India. Here, Marathi, Hindi, Gujarati, English, Konkani plays are performed daily. But pointing out that the centre of the National Theatre School is in Delhi and not in Mumbai. The president of the school, Paresh Rawal, said that like AIIMS, there should be a National School of Drama in every state along with a theatre that charges low rent. Theatre should have its own rights like OTT. He said that the National Theatre School should become independent and work with every university, many artists will be produced from it.

Renowned artist Raghuveer Yadav said “I have come from a small village near Jabalpur after learning the tricks of papad sellers, gram sellers etc to try our luck in thetres.

Pankaj Tripathi said that a new audience should be connected to the theatre, saying that in Bihar actors are called ‘Rangbaaz’.

Chittaranjan Tripathi, director of the National School of Drama, said that the Bharatiya Rang Mahotsav has been going on for the past 25 years and today it has become the world’s largest international theatre festival.

The festival began with the group rendition of the ‘Bharangam’ Festival song penned by lyricist Swanand Kirkire. The 22 day long ‘Bharangam’ festival to be held in 15 cities will showcase 150 plays.
