Gold smuggling worth 90.4 lakhs unearthed by Chennai Air Customs: 2 arrested

Chennai air customs based on specific information about gold was likely to be smuggled from Dubai by various airlines. The customs team laid a trap and intercepted three persons at the exit gate at Chennai airport. These three passengers arrived from Dubai by Fly by Dubai and Air India Express flights respectively.

After doing a thorough investigation and their personal body search, six bundles (3 each) of gold paste concealed in rectum were recovered from two persons. This paste was concealed in their rectum which was removed. Third passenger was also in possession of two bundles along with 2 gold cut bits weighing 81 grams from his trouser pocket.

All three passengers were identified as Nasar Ali Sirajudin aged 36, Mohamed Aakif Babu Badshah aged 20, and both are resident of Trichy. Third person was identified as Mohamed Kadafi aged 49 who hailed from Chennai.

In totality, 8 gold paste bundles weighing 1.88 kg were recovered. On extraction it yielded 1.78 kg of gold of 24 karat purity. The smuggled gold was valued at Rs. 90.4 lakhs as per current prevailing market price. The gold was recovered and seized under Customs Act. Two passengers namely Nasar Ali and Mohammad Aakif Babu were arrested.
