Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) mayor Kishori Pednekar on Wednesday travelled on a local train and requested passengers to wear masks.

Pednekar took the train from Byculla, where her official residence is, to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation headquarters. She was seen asking food stall operators on stations, and passengers to maintain social distancing and regularly wash their hands.

“If citizens do not follow Covid-19 guidelines, there will be no option for the state government but to go for another lockdown. It is for the citizens to ensure that proper masking, sanitisation, and social distancing is maintained,” she told a newswire.

Pednekar’s statement comes a day after Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar said that the Maharashtra government would take strict action if COVID-19 cases continue to shoot up in the state. He said on February 15: “We will have to take strict action after talking to the chief minister if cases continue to rise.”

On February 15, Maharashtra recorded a total of 3,365 fresh Coronavirus cases – more than the daily infections reported by Kerala in the past 24 hours. After a 42-day slump in the number of fresh coronavirus cases being reported, Maharashtra is back at the country’s top spot again, reporting maximum daily infections.

The BMC has set up squads at ward levels to ensure passengers wear masks.
