President of India Ram Nath Kovind on Tuesday appointed Justice NV Ramana as the new Chief Justice of India.
He is set to assume his duties from April 24.
In an official notification, the Centre stated, “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, The President is pleased to appoint Justice Nuthalapati Venkata Ramana, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief justice of India with effect from April 24.”
The current CJI, SA Bobde is due to retire on April 23.
At present, Justice Ramana is the senior-most Supreme Court judge after the CJI.
With his appointment today, Ramana has become the 48th Chief Justice of India. He will retire from the apex position on August 26, 2022.
In March, CJI Bobde had sent the recommendation of Ramana to the government, keeping with convention and norms of seniority.
