Streets, markets in Vasai-Virar deserted as weekend lockdown kicks in

Busy roads in the Vasai-Virar region turned deserted as Maharashtra went into a weekend lockdown that kicked in at 8 pm on Friday.

Shops and establishments, baring essential ones, were shut. All major markets in the region were shut on Saturday.

Heavy police presence was there on busy roads.

Cars and two-wheelers had to produce documents and proof for staying outdoors.

The weekend lockdown has been implemented across the state from Friday 8 pm to Monday 7 am.

The region has witnessed a surge in cases this month. The nine days of April have seen 4,620 cases as against 2,815 cases in March.

The total positive cases have touched 37,791 of which active cases are 4,898.

The death toll has touched 932.

Senior police officers on Saturday visited various areas in the region and urged people to stay indoors.

On weekdays, restrictions are in place for shops and establishments.

While movement of people is allowed from 7 am to 8 pm, non-essential shops are shut all day.
