- A most popular Chinese restaurant in Central Mumbai
Often, it’s the execution of the simplest dishes that reveals the competence of a kitchen, not of the dishes that are designed to awe and impress anyway. The identity of the humble dishes of which I speak will be revealed shortly. Of course, the competence of Shanghai Club at ITC Grand Central Parel, was never in question, considering it completing 17 years of successful operations.
I’ve followed Shanghai Club since its inception and still remember the ambitious menu it launched with. Umpteen times I have visited this restaurant but once again I felt like trying out authentic delicacies. Great ambience, perfect service with excellent food provided.
I am vegetarian but my family prefers to eat Non vegetarian, so it was a combination of vegetarian and non vegetarian delicacies. The vegetarian dishes we chose to relish included veg chilli butter soup, Sweet Corn almond, veg crystal dumpling, water chestnut baby corn, potato in kung pao sauce, tofu in chilly bean sauce, veg hakka noodles, ginger capsicum burnt garlic rice.
Our non vegetarian dishes included Chicken sui mai steamed chicken dim sum, Jumbo prawns with garlic sauce, Steamed snapper with ginger & onions, Kung Pao chicken, Double cooked crisp lamb in black bean chilli, Golden garlic and chicken fried rice and Shanghai noodles with seafood. For dessert we tried Sticky date cake with caramel sauce oriental cut fruits in desserts.
The Shanghai Club Kitchen team itself is led by the talented, celebrated Chef Paul Noronha, who, rather than bask in the limelight, prefers to quietly plod away in the kitchen, producing one perfect dish after another. I had the privilege of clicking a picture with Chef Paul despite his hectic schedule, which he obliged by smiling.
I must mention that vegetarian Chilli butter soup usually induces yawns but the Shanghai Club version, bold in flavour and satisfyingly thick, is leagues ahead of anything your neighbourhood Chinjabi joint can conjure up. We will definitely return to eat, what about you?
