H.E. Demeke Atnafu appointed as Ambassador, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to India

HIS EXCELLENCY, DEMEKE ATNAFU AMBULO has returned back to India as Ambassador, Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Ethiopia to India in New Delhi. He was given credential authority by Her Excellency Sahle-Work Zewde, President of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, in the capital city Addis Ababa.

This is Demeke’s third inning to be working in India, he knows Indian diplomacy inside out. In his first tenure he worked in the Ethiopian Embassy in New Delhi. His outstanding performance in working at Ethiopian Embassy, he was chosen to become Consul General of Ethiopia in Mumbai.

He headed Mumbai consulate Mumbai consulate for three and half years including the crucial time of pandemic. Despite all odds, he was able to attract many business houses to do business in Ethiopia. He opened his door to meet up with industrial and business houses with him and his team at ease and convenience. He simplified functioning of the consulate rules. He ensured that Ethiopia is promoted in a better way in all sectors. He left no stone unturned to put Ethiopia in top slot in India. He is the main brain behind establishing the Indo Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce in Mumbai.

In his new position as The Ambassador to Ethiopia in India, many top industrialists and business houses from all across the country are hopeful to begin business in Ethiopia. Industries in India are hopeful that Ethiopia will expand their horizon in India besides Gujarat and Maharashtra.

It is worth mentioning that during his previous tenure, he brought in new vigour in the functioning of the consulate by conducting more than 45 Business and investment promotion forums. These promotions were organized in collaboration with the Chamber of Commerce and industries in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Kolhapur, Surat and Ahmedabad. He made a business case for investment opportunities in Ethiopia, followed by numerous B2B meetings.

H. E. Demeke helped establish a good working relationship with Indian imports of soya bean, agricultural products and other products including precious and semi-precious stones, hides and skins, etc. He contributed to the increase of Ethiopian exports to India, from 55 million US $ in 2018-2019 to 96 million US $ in 2019-2020, which is really commendable.

Sunanda Rajendran, Founder Director and the Secretary General of Indo-African Chamber of Commerce & Industry (IACCI), on appointment of Demeke Atnafu as Ambassador to Ethiopia said “I am very happy and delighted to know that H.E. Demeke Atnafu Ambulo, who was our previous consul General of Ethiopia in Mumbai is appointed as The Ambassador of Ethiopia to India. I had the privilege to work with H.E. Demeke on many fronts. Whenever there was an African event, wherever Ethiopia needed to remain present, he was always in forefront as consul General, as a true Ethiopian citizen and always registered his presence. He gave us excellent platform many a time as CG to remain present, highlighting the importance of elevating trade and investments ties between India and Africa, India and Ethiopia on several fronts, may it be Eyes for Africa, Africa Day or seminar on business opportunities on Africa and Ethiopia, he always remained in forefront to make all programme a grand success”.

Sunanda further added “I must put it on record that our trip to Ethiopia, he was instrumental behind it to make it a grand success, a splendid arrangement made by him. It was.  Due to his personal involvement all important ministers, government officials and directors were present under one roof.  We are sure that under his leadership as Ambassador to Ethiopia in India, he will take Ethiopia to the next level of success and further enhance the relationship between Ethiopia. We congratulate him for his new assignment wholeheartedly”.
