In a sweeping operation targeting gold smuggling, the Airport Commissionerate of Mumbai Customs Zone III made substantial seizures, confiscating over 2.99 kilograms of gold worth Rs 1.72 crore across five separate cases on 14th and 15th March 2024. The series of interceptions unfolded across various international flights, revealing intricate smuggling attempts and thwarting illicit activities. Here’s an overview of the cases:

In the first and second cases, two foreign nationals arriving from Dubai on Spicejet Flight SG 14 came under Customs scrutiny based on specific intelligence. In separate instances, officials intercepted the passengers and unearthed 24 karat gold dust concealed in wax (6 units) and 24 karat gold bangles (2 units), totaling 1520.00 grams (net). The gold dust was ingeniously concealed in the rectum, while the bangles were discretely hidden on the passengers’ bodies.

Moving on to the third case, two Indian nationals arrived from Jeddah via Indigo Flight 6E 62, intending to board a domestic flight to Delhi via Indigo Flight 6E 333. Vigilant baggage screening personnel flagged suspicious images of the passengers’ check-in luggage, leading to the discovery of 24 karat gold bars (46 pieces) concealed within dates stored in the luggage. The total weight of the seized gold amounted to 815.840 grams (net), marking a significant victory against smuggling activities.

In the fourth case, an Indian national arriving from Bangkok on Air India Flight AI 337 was intercepted by customs authorities. Upon closer inspection, officials found 24 karat gold Kadas (2 units) concealed on the passenger’s person, weighing a total of 450.00 grams (net).

Similarly, in the fifth case, another Indian national arriving from Dubai via Air India Flight AI 984 was flagged by customs officials. Upon scrutiny, a 24 karat gold chain pendant weighing 208.00 grams (net) was discovered concealed on the passenger’s body, adding to the tally of confiscated contraband.

These meticulously executed operations underscore the relentless efforts of Mumbai Customs to combat smuggling activities and uphold the integrity of customs regulations. The seizures not only prevent the influx of illegal goods but also serve as a deterrent to potential smugglers, sending a clear message that illicit activities will not be tolerated.

As investigations continue into these cases, authorities remain steadfast in their commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring the integrity of border security measures.
