The Bharat Kosh, a curated repository of Indic knowledge, was inaugurated by H.E. Santosh Jha, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, at the Colombo Public Library. Nestled within the historic Colombo Public Library, the Bharat Kosh features a carefully selected collection of books about India and works by Indian authors, alongside artifacts and cultural treasures that celebrate India’s rich heritage. This inauguration marks the beginning of Bharat-Sri Lanka Maitri Week 2024, a week-long event dedicated to showcasing the vibrant cultural and artistic exchanges between India and Sri Lanka.
The week is being celebrated by the High Commission of India and its cultural arm, the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre, in honor of India’s 78th Independence Day. A key highlight of the festivities will be the Bharat-Sri Lanka Maitri Utsav, taking place from August 15-18 at Colombo’s historic Independence Square and Park.
The Utsav will include a Traditional Handicrafts Exhibition highlighting creations from artisans in both India and Sri Lanka. Attendees can enjoy Cultural Performances featuring a variety of troupes from both nations, as well as an Open Mic Evening where university and school students will have the opportunity to showcase their talents. The Food Festival will present a delectable assortment of Indian and Sri Lankan dishes, along with other culinary treats. Additionally, there will be Book Stalls and a range of engaging activities and exhibitions to explore.
The Bharat-Sri Lanka Maitri Utsav 2024 aims to strengthen cultural bonds and celebrate the rich heritage shared by these two civilizational twins. The event will be open to the public starting the evening of August 15, 2024.
