In a step to strengthen diplomatic ties between India and Sri Lanka, a Memorandum of Understanding was signed on January 16, 2025, for the establishment of 60 smart classrooms in Sri Lanka’s plantation schools, with a grant of LKR 508 million from the Indian Government. The agreement was signed by Indian High Commissioner Santosh Jha and Sri Lankan Ministry of Plantation Secretary B.K. Prabhath Chandrakeerthi.

The project will cover 48 schools in Nuwara Eliya, and six schools each in Kandy and Badulla districts. The initiative aims to enhance students’ learning experiences by integrating modern information and communications technology into classrooms, fostering a better educational environment.

India’s development assistance to Sri Lanka, amounting to over USD 5 billion, continues to positively impact the country’s social sectors. This collaboration strengthens the educational sector, which is a key focus of India’s aid to Sri Lanka across all districts.

This initiative adds to India’s ongoing educational support in Sri Lanka, including the establishment of English language laboratories, school renovations, and the creation of smart classrooms in the Southern Province. India’s support has significantly benefitted over 2,000 teachers in plantation schools through a recent STEM training program.
