Mumbai witnessed an evening of elegance and cultural camaraderie as the French National Day, popularly known as Bastille Day, was celebrated at the iconic Taj Mahal Palace. The event highlighted the enduring friendship and strong cultural, economic, and diplomatic ties between India and France.
The celebration was hosted by Consul General of France in Mumbai, His Excellency Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet, and attended by dignitaries from various walks of life. The evening was anchored by Snehal Agrawal, Deputy Press Attaché, setting the tone for a memorable gathering that blended tradition and modernity.
Speaking at the event, Jean-Marc Séré-Charlet reflected on his tenure, saying, “This will be my last Bastille Day in culturally vibrant city Mumbai after four wonderful years. France stands firmly with India against all forms of terrorism. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and French President Emmanuel Macron share immense mutual respect, and we strongly condemn the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam.”
He further expressed his appreciation to his team, including Deputy Consul General Sami Bouakaze, for their efforts in making the consulate one of the busiest globally. “We want more Indian tourists to discover France, which is why we are granting long-term visas—provided they have passports with sufficient validity—so they can return and enjoy France again and again,”he added.

Speaking exclusively to this correspondent, H.E. Séré-Charlet revealed his fondness for Indian cinema: “I love Bollywood. I first met Shah Rukh Khan in Paris and later again in Mumbai. I’ve also had the privilege of meeting icons like Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, and many others. I also had memorable interactions with several Chief Ministers and Governors, including Maharashtra CM Devendra Fadnavis.”
Sujata Saunik, IAS, Chief Guest of the evening and former Chief Secretary of Maharashtra, said, “Bastille Day is a celebration of liberty, equality, and fraternity—values that resonate deeply with India. Events like these strengthen the cultural, economic, and diplomatic ties between our two nations. Maharashtra is proud to host this celebration in Mumbai, a city that embodies diversity and global connectivity.”
Guest of Honour Kalki Koechlin added a personal note: “France holds a special place in my heart. Celebrations like Bastille Day remind us of the beauty of cultural exchange and shared values between India and France.”
Designer Vaishali S, who recently showcased her collection at Paris Fashion Week, shared her excitement: “Showcasing my couture at Paris Fashion Week was a dream come true, and being part of this Bastille Day celebration feels equally special. France has always inspired my creativity, and I am proud to represent Indian craftsmanship on a global platform. Fashion is a powerful medium of Indo-French cultural exchange, and I am thankful to the Consul General for inviting me to this august gathering.”
The evening concluded with an engaging cultural performance, fine French cuisine, and a networking session that reflected the spirit of camaraderie and partnership between the two nations.
