Colombo came alive with the spirit of Diwali as the Indian diaspora and Sri Lankan friends joined hands to celebrate the Festival of Lights from 17–20 October 2025. The festivities reflected not only the joy and spirituality of the festival but also the enduring cultural and social ties between India and Sri Lanka.
The celebrations began on 17 October with a grand Diwali Ball organized by the Indian Cultural Association (ICA) and the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre at Water’s Edge, Battaramulla. The venue sparkled with festive décor as attendees enjoyed Bollywood music, energetic dance performances, and traditional Indian cuisine. High Commissioner H.E. Santosh Jha joined the Diaspora, and the evening featured performances by Sri Lankan band Raavans, music by Gemanth Nigam, and a dazzling fireworks display.
On 18 October, COLIND and the Indian CEO Forum hosted another Diwali Ball at the Taj Samudra. The event showcased Indo-Lankan cultural harmony, attended by dignitaries including Hon. Vijitha Herath, Hon. Sunil Handunneththi, Hon. Anil Jayantha Fernando, former President H.E. Ranil Wickremesinghe, and members of the diplomatic corps. Sri Lankan artists from the Prashadi Dance Academy and singer Umara Sinhawansa enthralled the audience with captivating performances. In his address, High Commissioner Jha highlighted India’s recent economic reforms, noting a festive shopping boom and vibrant market activity during Diwali.
The celebrations concluded on 20 October at the Indian High Commission, where High Commissioner Jha and Madam Tanuja Jha hosted officers and their families in a warm, familial atmosphere.
From glittering balls to intimate gatherings, Diwali in Colombo celebrated joy, cultural exchange, and the deep-rooted friendship between India and Sri Lanka, illuminating the city with lights, music, and togetherness.
