The coastal resort city of Sanya in south-eastern China is set to host nearly 1,800 athletes for the 2026 Asian Beach Games, scheduled to take place from April 22 to 30. The event, held every four years under the aegis of the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA), is expected to witness one of the largest participations in the Games’ history.
A total of 1,790 athletes from 45 national and regional Olympic committees will compete across 14 sports, 15 disciplines and 62 events, highlighting the growing popularity of beach sports across Asia. The large turnout reflects strong continental interest and the expanding scope of the Games.
According to a statement issued by the Sanya Tourism Board, preparations are in full swing, with most events receiving adequate entries to proceed as planned. However, women’s beach football has been cancelled due to low participation, pointing to uneven development in certain disciplines.
Sanya, located on the southern tip of Hainan Island, is widely regarded as one of China’s premier tropical destinations. Its scenic coastline and modern infrastructure make it an ideal venue for hosting international beach sporting events of this scale.
Organisers have expressed confidence in delivering a successful edition of the Games, emphasising smooth coordination, athlete facilities and spectator engagement. With just days to go, the city is poised to welcome athletes and officials from across Asia for what promises to be a vibrant celebration of sport, culture and competition.
