Legendary celebrity chef and Padma Shri awardee Sanjeev Kapoor has underscored the importance of professional recognition in the culinary industry, saying that respect for a chef’s expertise is often more significant than financial compensation.

Kapoor made the remarks while reflecting on his decision to initially decline an offer to join MasterChef India, one of the country’s most popular cooking reality shows. Speaking on journalist and author Vir Sanghvi’s podcast Culinary Culture, the renowned chef recounted key moments from his decades-long journey in the culinary world, including his association with television and his eventual role as a judge on the third season of the programme.

According to Kapoor, he was first approached to be part of the inaugural season of MasterChef India. However, he chose not to accept the offer after the producers did not agree to one of his conditions. Kapoor revealed that he had sought to be paid one rupee more than actor Akshay Kumar, who was associated with the show’s first season.

Speaking to Mumbai Messenger newspaper, Kapoor said, “A chef’s recognition is of paramount importance.” He noted that chefs are custodians of culinary heritage, architects of dining experiences and ambassadors of culture, adding that acknowledgement of their contribution to the profession often carries greater value than financial compensation alone.

Kapoor eventually joined MasterChef India in its third season after discussions resumed with the producers. His remarks have once again highlighted the growing stature of chefs in India’s food and entertainment landscape, where culinary professionals today command greater visibility and influence than ever before.

For many aspiring chefs, Kapoor’s journey serves as a reminder that professional recognition and respect remain as valuable as success itself.
