Aims to boost cooperation in logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare

The Consul General of Belgium, Frank Geerkens, met with Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai on Monday, October 21, 2024. During their discussion, Geerkens outlined the upcoming Belgian Economic Mission, emphasizing its significance in strengthening bilateral relations between Belgium and India.
The meeting provided a platform for the Consul General to share insights on Belgium’s intentions to expand cooperation in various sectors, including logistics, manufacturing, and healthcare, while also highlighting the existing strong trade ties, particularly in diamonds. Governor Radhakrishnan welcomed these initiatives, expressing optimism about the potential for increased collaboration and economic growth between the two regions. This engagement reflects a growing interest in enhancing international partnerships and fostering economic development in Maharashtra.
The Consul General emphasized that Belgium has a significant and thriving diamond trade with both Maharashtra and Gujarat, positioning the country as a key player in this valuable industry. He noted that this established trade relationship not only benefits both regions economically but also highlights the deep-rooted ties between Belgium and India.
In addition to the diamond sector, the Consul General pointed out that Belgium is recognized as a global hub for healthcare innovation and services. He conveyed that there are ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation in healthcare, which could lead to shared expertise, joint ventures, and advancements in medical technology between the two countries. This collaboration aims to address common health challenges and improve healthcare delivery systems.
Furthermore, Geerkens informed Governor Radhakrishnan about the initiatives of the Federation of European Businesses in India (FEBI), which is actively working to bolster trade between India and Europe. This organization focuses on creating opportunities for European businesses in India while facilitating partnerships that can lead to mutual growth.
The Consul General also highlighted Belgium’s collaboration with Maharashtra’s skill development agency, indicating a commitment to promoting workforce training and enhancing the skills of the local population. This partnership aims to equip individuals with the necessary skills to meet the demands of various industries, thereby fostering economic development and job creation in the region. Overall, these efforts reflect Belgium’s dedication to strengthening its economic ties and collaborative initiatives with India.
Maharashtra Governor Radhakrishnan expressed optimism that the forthcoming free trade agreement between India and Europe, once finalized, could potentially double multilateral trade between the two regions.
