In a significant development, the Sri Lankan Acting High Commissioner in New Delhi was called to the Ministry of External Affairs this morning, where India expressed strong disapproval over the firing by the Sri Lankan Navy during the detention of 13 Indian fishermen near Delft Island earlier today.

Among the 13 fishermen aboard the vessel, two have suffered serious injuries and are receiving treatment at the Jaffna Teaching Hospital. Three others have minor injuries and have been treated. Indian Consulate officials in Jaffna have visited the injured men and are offering all necessary support to both the fishermen and their families.

The Government of India reiterated its firm stance on the matter, stressing the importance of handling fishermen-related issues with compassion and respect for their livelihoods. The use of force in such situations, it was emphasized, is entirely unacceptable. India further called for both governments to strictly uphold the existing agreements regarding these matters.
