What sparked your passion for acting? Was there a specific moment or film that inspired you?
My passion for acting truly began with A Separation, directed by Mr. Farhadi. I happened to meet him by chance, and he saw something in me that I hadn’t recognized in myself. Before this film, I had no experience in acting or cinema, and I didn’t come from an artistic family. The opportunity to work with such a renowned filmmaker was life-changing, and that project marked the beginning of my career in cinema. It gave me a new perspective on storytelling, and since then, I’ve been fully immersed in this world.
How did you land your first film, A Separation, and what was it like working with Asghar Farhadi?
Landing A Separation was purely a stroke of fate. The process was quite unique, especially since it was my first experience in acting. Working with Mr. Farhadi was both challenging and exciting. He has a distinct approach to filmmaking, one that emphasizes authenticity and emotional depth. Despite being a newcomer, he made me feel comfortable and encouraged me to explore my character fully. It was an incredibly enriching experience, and I learned invaluable lessons that have shaped my approach to acting.
Which figures in cinema, both Iranian and international, have influenced you the most?
I have always admired several figures in cinema, both within Iranian cinema and internationally. In Iran, Sosan Taslimi’s powerful performances have deeply influenced me, as well as the works of Abbas Kiarostami. His films opened my eyes to a more introspective, poetic way of storytelling. As for international cinema, there are countless actors and directors who have inspired me, and choosing a few is difficult. But, I’m particularly moved by the works of Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, and the films of Ingmar Bergman and Federico Fellini. Their ability to transcend language and culture through their performances is something I greatly admire.
As a young actress in Iranian cinema, did you face any challenges? How did you overcome them?
Like anyone in the creative industry, I’ve faced my fair share of challenges. In Iranian cinema, there are unique obstacles that come with the cultural, political, and social climate. As a young actress, it was difficult to navigate the industry while staying true to my artistic vision. However, I’ve always tried to surround myself with talented, professional artists who share a passion for their craft. Patience has been key in overcoming these hurdles. Each challenge has taught me something new, and over time, I’ve learned how to face them with resilience and determination.
How do you see the role of women in Iranian cinema evolving? Do you think there are more opportunities now than before?
The role of women in Iranian cinema has definitely evolved over the years. There are more opportunities now for women to showcase their talents, and many are now playing complex, nuanced roles. However, challenges still remain, especially due to cultural and social constraints. Women in Iranian cinema often have to fight for the right to express themselves fully on screen, but things are improving. I believe we are making progress, and with time, we will see even more opportunities for women to lead in the industry.
Do you follow Bollywood? If so, who are your favorite stars?
Yes, I absolutely love Bollywood films! The vibrancy, the music, and the energy in Bollywood cinema are unmatched. I am drawn to the colorful storytelling and the larger-than-life performances. I would love to work in the Bollywood industry one day. My favorite Bollywood stars include Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Akshay Kumar, Kajol, Anushka Sharma, and Deepika Padukone. Their charisma and talent have always inspired me.
