India Post Maharashtra Circle, on the occasion of Earth Day, unveiled a Permanent Pictorial Cancellation at the Nannaj Sub Post Office, highlighting the Great Indian Bustard, an iconic and critically endangered bird species. The special philatelic release, along with two postcards featuring the Great Indian Bustard, was unveiled by Shri Amitabh Singh, Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle.
Nannaj, located near the Great Indian Bustard Sanctuary, plays a vital role as a habitat for this majestic bird. The unveiling of this pictorial cancellation at the local post office carries deep symbolic and conservation significance, drawing attention to the importance of preserving the species and its natural environment.
The event was attended by a distinguished group of guests, including Shri Kishor Chandak, a renowned philatelist; Shri Dabhade, Forest Officer of Nannaj; Shri S.D. More, Senior Postmaster of Solapur HO; Ms. Rani Tonte, Sarpanch of Nannaj village; along with local residents, wildlife enthusiasts, and departmental staff.
During the event, Shri Amitabh Singh emphasized Earth Day’s role as a reminder of humanity’s responsibility to protect the planet’s biodiversity. He noted, “The Great Indian Bustard, as an endangered species, symbolizes our commitment to conservation. Through philately, the Department of Posts plays a key role in raising awareness about environmental issues, preserving cultural heritage, and fostering environmental consciousness.”
The Permanent Pictorial Cancellation, depicting the Great Indian Bustard in its natural habitat, will be available at the Nannaj Sub Post Office for collectors and conservation advocates. These philatelic releases serve as a lasting reminder of the importance of sustainability, wildlife protection, and ecological awareness.
This initiative reflects the Department of Posts’ continued commitment to environmental preservation and the promotion of India’s rich natural heritage.
