The New Zealand High Commission recently concluded a dynamic week of cultural engagement in the capital with a standout culinary event led by award-winning chef Sid Sahrawat. The exclusive pop-up, held at CAARA at Ogaan, brought together flavours from New Zealand and India, underscoring food as a powerful medium of connection between the two countries.

The initiative was part of New Zealand’s Cultural Diplomacy International Programme (CDIP)—an ongoing effort supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade and the Ministry of Culture and Heritage—aimed at deepening ties with India through cultural and artistic exchanges across 2024 and 2025.

Chef Sid Sahrawat, celebrated for his acclaimed Auckland-based restaurants—Cassia, Sid at The French Café, and KOL—crafted a modern Indian menu using premium New Zealand ingredients. The curated dishes included Hawkes Bay Lamb Chops with Spiced Cream Cheese, Gunpowder Kulcha with Coconut and Curry Leaf, Roasted Cauliflower with Korma Sauce, and a refreshing Kiwifruit Mango Trifle.

His Excellency Patrick Rata New Zealand’s High Commissioner to India Speaking at the event said, “Events like these highlight how shared experiences can shape stronger partnerships. Chef Sahrawat’s creations beautifully bring together flavours, techniques and ingredients from New Zealand and India, and connect us in one of the best ways possible – through food!”

Chef Sahrawat shared his excitement about the collaboration, saying, “I’m excited to present a menu that reflects where I come from and the place I now call home. Working with the talented chefs and food experts here, revisiting Indian flavours, and showcasing New Zealand’s incredible produce has been a fabulous experience.”

The week-long programme also included a culinary showcase at the New Zealand High Commission, a collaborative session with Chef Manish Mehrotra, and a Chef’s Table dinner at CAARA, promoting dialogue within the culinary industry while celebrating the Indian-origin diaspora. Chef Sahrawat’s presence as a prominent member of this community added a personal and cultural resonance to the celebrations.
