Indian Navy’s Western Naval Command marked Navy Day with a grand ‘Beating Retreat’ and ‘Tattoo Ceremony’ at the Gateway of India, attended by Governor Acharya Devvrat. The event celebrated India’s maritime strength, discipline, and naval traditions, showcasing the courage and legacy of the Indian Navy.

The ceremony featured a thrilling fly-past by naval helicopters, an impressive performance by the Naval Central Band, and flawless drill routines executed without verbal commands. Adding a cultural touch, young girls from the Sea Cadet Corps performed the traditional ‘Hornpipe Sailors Dance’. Ships at sea were illuminated to mark the occasion, highlighting the Navy’s operational presence and grandeur.

Navy Day, celebrated annually on December 4, commemorates the heroic attack on Karachi harbour during the 1971 India-Pakistan War and honours the martyrs of the Indian Navy.

Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan, Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, senior naval officers, veterans, and dignitaries were present. The highlight of the event was the fly-past and operational demonstration by INS Shikra, showcasing India’s modern naval capabilities. The celebration aimed to inspire the younger generation with national pride, discipline, and awareness of the Navy’s heroic legacy.

Following the Gateway programme, Governor Devvrat attended a reception at the ‘Navy House,’ meeting invited naval officers, veterans, and dignitaries. Vice Admiral Swaminathan introduced the Governor to the guests, and the gathering offered an opportunity to extend Navy Day greetings while celebrating India’s maritime heritage.
