The Consulate General of China in Mumbai organized a memorial event to mark the 83rd death anniversary of Dr. Dwarkanath Shantaram Kotnis, the Indian physician celebrated in both India and China for his dedicated medical service during the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression, on December 8, 2025. Widely revered in China, he is known as Ke Dihua (柯棣华).

The ceremony, held at the Dr Kotnis Smarak Garden in Solapur, was attended by His Excellency Qin Jie, Consul General of China in Mumbai, Solapur Municipal Commissioner Dr Sachin Ombase, diplomats from the Consulate, scholars, students and several young participants.

Addressing the gathering, Consul General Qin Jie said Dr Kotnis remains a lasting symbol of friendship and solidarity between the two nations. “His spirit will always guide us to work closely with each other and promote our friendship,” he noted.

As part of the commemoration, the Consulate General donated more than 80 photographs depicting China’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and highlighting the invaluable contributions of Dr Kotnis. The curated collection aims to deepen public understanding of the historic bond forged through his selfless service.

A wreath-laying ceremony was also held at the bronze statue of Dr Kotnis, jointly led by Consul General Qin Jie and Dr Sachin Ombase, further honouring the doctor who devoted his life to humanitarian care.

Dr Kotnis, who travelled to China in 1938 as part of a medical mission, is remembered for his tireless efforts in treating soldiers and civilians during the war. His legacy continues to remain a cornerstone of India-China goodwill.

A point of significance is that the Chinese Consulate, reaffirming the deep regard China holds for Dr Kotnis, has been marking his legacy every year as a heartfelt tribute to the historic bond he helped create between the two nations.
