Sri Lanka and India are seeking to strengthen bilateral trade and investment ties by exploring opportunities across gems and jewellery, manufacturing, tourism, logistics, healthcare, education and other sectors. The opportunities were discussed at the Sri Lanka–India Trade and Investment Promotional Event organised by the All India Association of Industries (AIAI) and MVIRDC World Trade Center Mumbai.
Ms. Shirani Ariyarathne, Consul/Minister (Commercial), Consulate General of Sri Lanka, said the relationship between the two countries goes beyond trade and is rooted in centuries of cultural and civilizational ties. She highlighted the role of AIAI and WTC Mumbai in connecting Sri Lankan business delegations with Indian industry.
She said Sri Lanka’s globally recognised Ceylon sapphires and gemstone sector offered significant scope for value-chain partnerships with India’s gems and jewellery industry. She also encouraged Indian businesses, particularly MSMEs, to participate in Sri Lanka Expo 2027 in Colombo.
Mr. Mangala Wijesinghe, Chairman and CEO, Sri Lanka Export Development Board, said Sri Lanka recorded economic growth of over 6% last year, while exports grew by around 6% to USD 17.3 billion. He highlighted opportunities in automotive components, minerals, beverages, logistics, rubber-based products, tourism, education, wellness and healthcare.
“The Indo–Sri Lanka Free Trade Agreement provides a strong foundation for businesses from both countries to deepen this partnership,” Wijesinghe said.
Prof. S.P. Chaminda, Chairman and CEO, National Gem and Jewellery Authority of Sri Lanka, said Sri Lanka aims to position itself as the sapphire capital of the world and a trusted source of responsibly produced gemstones. He highlighted initiatives covering ethical mining, certification, hallmarking and regulatory compliance, along with greater domestic value addition through cut and polished gemstones.
Ms. Priya Pansare, Senior Director – Trade, Investment and International Relations, World Trade Center Mumbai, highlighted the growing economic relationship between the two countries and encouraged greater exchange of business delegations.
The event brought together Sri Lankan trade and investment organisations, gem exporters and Indian industry representatives. Presentations on investment opportunities were followed by B2B meetings to facilitate business connections and explore new avenues for bilateral cooperation.
