Mind boggling: Chennai Air Customs seized heroin worth 100 Cr.

· It is a biggest seizure of narcotics in the recent past due to customs high alertness

In one of the biggest seizure of narcotics at Chennai International Airport, 15.6 kg of Heroin has been seized from two Tanzanians Nationals. They were identified as One Deborah Eliah, 46, and Felix Obadia, 45, of Tanzania from their passports.

Based on specific information that narcotics drug from African countries are likely to be smuggled into India, high alert was maintained at the Airport. A couple, who arrived by Qatar Airways flight 528 from Johannesburg via Doha were intercepted at exit on suspicion of carrying narcotics.

Both were questioned by customs officials, they appeared to be nervous and gave evasive replies. They both were carrying two stroller bags each as their check-in baggage. On examination, it was noticed that there was a false bottom in which plastic packets were concealed.

In each stroller, five plastic packets were found. When they were cut and opened, white coarse powder was found inside. The plastic packets were sprinkled with some spicy powder to camouflage the smell. The powder tested positive for Heroin with drug testing kit.

After thoroughly examination of heroin powder, it weighed total 15.6 kg of white coarse powder suspected to be Heroin. In international market the heroin powder is valued at Rs. 100 crores. The powder was recovered and seized under The NDPS Act 1985, read with Customs Act.

While investigating and questioning, it was learnt that Deborah Eliah was travelling to India for medical treatment along with her attendant Felix at a Super Speciality Hospital at Bengaluru. The visa was granted to them on basis the of communication from the Hospital. As they could not get any direct flight to Bengaluru, they landed in Chennai. Both have been arrested under NDPS Act. Being a serious matter and such a large volume of smuggling of heroin is seized, Chennai custom is doing a thorough investigation and would arrest all the persons involved in this racket.

A senior official from Chennai Customs on the condition of anonymity said “on daily basis we are keeping strict vigil on every passenger in person and through CCTV. We have also activated our sources to provide accurate tip on smuggling activities so they can be trapped immediately. Due to our alertness, every day we are able to track smuggling activities”.
