In a gesture of cultural appreciation and diplomatic goodwill, the High Commissioner of India to Sri Lanka, H.E. Santosh Jha, recently visited the renowned Gangaramaya Temple in Colombo. The purpose of the visit was to seek blessings for the health, peace, and prosperity of the people of both Sri Lanka and India, as well as to celebrate the enduring friendship between the two nations. Accompanying the High Commissioner on this auspicious occasion was his spouse, Mrs. Tanuja Jha.
Upon arriving at the temple, the High Commissioner was warmly welcomed by Venerable Dr. Kirinde Assaji Thero, the Deputy Incumbent of the Gangaramaya Temple. During the visit, Venerable Assaji Thero fondly reminisced about Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the temple in 2017, during which he inaugurated the International Vesak Day Celebrations. The venerable monk also shared insights from his studies in India, emphasizing the significance of the deep civilizational ties that bind the two countries. As a gesture of blessing, he tied pirith noola on the hands of High Commissioner Jha and Mrs. Jha after conducting a special Puja at the temple.
High Commissioner Jha took the opportunity to emphasize India’s commitment to strengthening multifaceted ties with Sri Lanka, especially focusing on the profound civilizational, historical, religious, and cultural bonds. Discussions between the High Commissioner and Venerable Assaji Thero delved into the current engagement of the High Commission of India, including scholarship offerings for monks pursuing higher studies in India. Additionally, they explored various developmental projects aimed at reinforcing the Buddhist ties between the two nations. Notably, a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) outlines plans for the solar electrification of religious temples under a USD 10 million Indian grant.
Reiterating India’s steadfast commitment, High Commissioner Jha emphasized the country’s dedication to fostering even stronger, all-encompassing cooperation with Sri Lanka. This commitment aligns with India’s Neighbourhood First policy, with a focus on placing people at the center of this collaborative effort. The visit to the Gangaramaya Temple serves as a testament to the enduring cultural and spiritual connections that underpin the diplomatic relationship between India and Sri Lanka.
