India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka, H.E. Santosh Jha, and Sri Lanka’s Minister of Urban Development jointly inaugurated the Thiruvalluvar Kudiyieruppu Model Village in Kilinochchi on January 17, 2025. They handed over homes to 24 beneficiary families. Deputy Minister of Urban Development, Hon. T. B. Sarath also participated in the ceremony, along with senior officials from various government bodies.
The Model Village Housing Project, supported by India’s grant assistance, is being implemented across all 25 Sri Lankan districts in collaboration with the Ministry of Urban Development, Construction and Housing. The project, which began with a Memorandum of Understanding signed in 2017, aims to provide housing for 600 low-income families. Each district receives a model village with 24 houses. Previously, villages have been inaugurated in 12 districts, and the project, nearing 96% completion, is set to expand further.
