In a significant development aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, India and China have agreed to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and direct flights between the two countries in 2025, coinciding with the 75th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic ties between New Delhi and Beijing.
The decision to revive the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra, which had been halted since 2020, comes as part of ongoing efforts to enhance cooperation between the two nations. In a meeting between Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the two countries also reached an agreement in principle to restart direct flights.
“The two sides decided to resume the Kailash Mansarovar Yatra in the summer of 2025, with the relevant mechanisms to discuss the modalities as per existing agreements. Additionally, an early meeting of the India-China Expert Level Mechanism will be held to discuss the resumption of hydrological data provision and other trans-border river cooperation,” the Ministry of External Affairs stated.
Vikram Misri’s two-day visit to Beijing included discussions under the Foreign Secretary-Vice Minister mechanism and was aligned with agreements made by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping during their meeting in Kazan, Russia, in October. The meeting marked a significant step in efforts to stabilize and enhance the relationship between India and China.
