Travel to the Konkan coast is set to get faster and smoother with the long-awaited Ro-Ro (roll-on/roll-off) ferry service between Mumbai and Sindhudurg scheduled to begin operations from September 1. The service, expected to slash travel time from the current 10–12 hours by road to just 3–5.5 hours by sea, is being hailed as a breakthrough in coastal connectivity.

State port development minister Rane confirmed that the service had been ready earlier but its launch was delayed owing to rough seas and warnings issued to fishermen during the monsoon. “The moment the weather stabilises, the service will commence from September 1. It will ensure Konkan residents and tourists alike have a safe, quick and reliable journey,” he said. To further enhance accessibility, last-mile connectivity will be provided through bus services linking the jetties to nearby towns.

The fare structure has also been finalised. Economy class tickets will cost ₹2,500, premium economy ₹4,000, business class ₹7,500 and first class ₹9,000 for the entire journey. Vehicle tariffs include ₹6,000 for cars, ₹1,000 for two-wheelers, ₹600 for bicycles and ₹13,000 for mini buses. Larger buses will be charged based on capacity. Officials said the tariffs were set keeping in mind both operational sustainability and affordability for passengers, particularly during festive rush periods when rail and road fares typically soar.

Highlighting the significance of the project, Rane described the ferry as a “game-changer” for Konkan connectivity. He added that the state government was already drawing up plans to expand the network to other destinations such as Shrivardhan and Mandwa. For this, new jetty infrastructure will be created along the coastline.

“For years, Konkan residents have endured crowded trains and heavily congested highways, especially during Ganeshotsav and Holi. This Ro-Ro ferry will finally offer a reliable alternative, saving valuable time while ensuring safety and convenience,” he remarked.

Beyond easing seasonal travel, the new service is expected to have a long-term impact on tourism in the Konkan belt. By offering quicker and more comfortable access, the ferry is likely to attract more visitors to Sindhudurg’s beaches, forts and cultural hubs, giving a boost to the local economy.

With its scheduled launch on September 1, the Mumbai-Sindhudurg Ro-Ro ferry marks a milestone in Maharashtra’s maritime infrastructure and opens up a new chapter in the state’s transport landscape.
