In a recent operation conducted by the Airport Commissionerate of Mumbai Customs Zone-III from April 15th to 18th, 2024, a staggering 9.482 kilograms of gold, valued at Rs. 5.71 crore, was seized across 14 cases. This significant haul underscores the persistent efforts of authorities to combat illicit activities within the airport premises.

Among the various methods employed by smugglers, gold was discovered concealed in a multitude of ways. Instances included gold being hidden on the bodies of passengers, concealed in their rectums, stashed in hand baggage, and ingeniously packaged within specially designed packets concealed within undergarments.

The operation resulted in the apprehension of eight individuals involved in these smuggling attempts, shedding light on the international dimension of the illicit gold trade.

One notable aspect of the seizures involved the interception of foreign nationals arriving from Nairobi, Addis Ababa, and Paris. These individuals were found to be carrying 22KT gold melted bars and crude jewellery, totalling 1681 grams. The gold was cunningly concealed within their undergarments and on their bodies, highlighting the sophisticated methods employed by smugglers to evade detection.

Additionally, twelve Indian nationals traveling from various destinations such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Jeddah, Bahrain, Kuwait, and Jakarta were intercepted. Upon inspection, authorities discovered 6627 grams of gold concealed within their rectums, on their bodies, and inside their undergarments. This widespread attempt to smuggle gold further emphasizes the need for stringent security measures at international airports.

In a particularly intriguing case, two Indian nationals were apprehended for attempting to smuggle gold concealed in their undergarments with the assistance of an airport contractual staff member in the transit area. A total of 1174 grams of gold dust was recovered, leading to the arrest of all three individuals involved.

The successful outcome of this operation highlights the vigilance and dedication of Mumbai Customs Zone-III in safeguarding national interests and preventing the illegal movement of precious commodities. However, it also serves as a reminder of the ongoing challenges posed by organized smuggling networks and the importance of continued cooperation between law enforcement agencies to combat such illicit activities effectively.
