In a significant step toward enhancing railway safety and efficiency, the Government of India has released the first installment of approximately USD 2.5 million (around LKR 770 million) for the installation of an advanced signalling and telecommunication system on the Maho–Anuradhapura Railway Line in Sri Lanka. The initiative marks a key milestone in the ongoing India–Sri Lanka railway cooperation.
The project was jointly launched by the Prime Minister of India and the President of Sri Lanka during the latter’s official visit to India in April 2025. Initially conceived as a Line of Credit (LoC) project valued at USD 14.89 million, it was later converted into a full grant by India during the Sri Lankan President’s earlier visit in December 2024. The project is being executed by Ircon International Limited, a renowned Indian public sector enterprise.
India has already supported the upgrading of tracks on the Northern Line, allowing trains to operate at speeds of up to 100 kmph. The current project will complement these upgrades by introducing a state-of-the-art signalling system that enhances passenger safety, enables real-time train tracking, and streamlines operations through centralized control. The improved system will also allow simultaneous reception and dispatch of trains at stations, reducing delays and increasing service frequency. Preliminary work is underway, with completion targeted for August 2026.
India’s support to Sri Lanka’s railway infrastructure has been extensive, with total assistance exceeding USD 1.2 billion. To date, India has helped construct and rehabilitate nearly 500 km of railway track and installed modern signalling and communication systems over 400 km. In addition, India has supplied various types of rolling stock, including locomotives, Diesel Multiple Units (DMUs), and mainline coaches, contributing to the modernization of Sri Lanka Railways.
This latest initiative reflects the people-centric vision of India’s development cooperation and reiterates its strong commitment to supporting connectivity and infrastructure in Sri Lanka. As the two countries continue to deepen their partnership, this project stands as another example of shared growth and regional collaboration.
