A second-year B.Tech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was found dead in his hostel room on the institute’s Powai campus on Tuesday, police said. The incident has prompted an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the student’s death.
According to the Powai Police, the 20-year-old student, a native of Pilani in Rajasthan, was residing in Hostel No. 4 on the campus. An Accidental Death Report (ADR) has been registered under the relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, and further investigation is underway.
Police officials said they are examining the student’s mobile phone, laptop and other electronic devices as part of the investigation. Statements of fellow students and other persons connected with the case are also being recorded to establish the sequence of events.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination, and the exact cause of death will be determined after the medical report and completion of the investigation, officials said.
The incident has drawn attention within the institute, while police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the student’s death. Authorities have urged the public to refrain from speculation until the investigation is completed.
No official statement indicating any specific motive had been issued at the time of going to press. Further action will be taken based on the findings of the post-mortem report and other evidence collected during the investigation.
