Noble Cause: Rotary Pune & Lokmanya Hospital organised Endoscopic Surgery Camp in Ethiopia

Rotary Club of Pune South celebrating Golden Jubilee 

Crossing Indian Boundary for noble cause, Rotary Club of Pune South and Lokmanya Hospital, Pune organised Endoscopic Surgery Camp at St. Paul’s hospital in Addis Ababa, capital city of Ethiopia.it is a major Golden Jubilee celebration event of Rotary Club of Pune South.This is the first camp being organized by an individual Rotary Club as a social cause, on foreign land. This surgery camp began on began on 9th February and continued till 15th February, 2020. The team is planning to perform 100 surgeries and 300 consultations during the camp.

In this regard, a press conference held at St Paul Hospital in Addis Ababa, on February 12 2020 in connection with Endoscopic Surgery Camp, organized by Rotary Club of Pune South and Lokmanya Hospital. The press meet was attended by H.E. Anurag Srivastava, Ambassador of India to Ethiopia, H.E Demeke Atnafu Ambulo, Consul General of Ethiopia in Mumbai, representatives of the Ministry of Health of Ethiopia, St. Paul Hospital and Media representatives.

A team of 12 well experienced doctors and volunteers specially flown from India for this camp to perform surgeries. The team includes specialists in the areas of General Surgery, Urology, Gynecology, Orthopedics and two experienced Anesthetists.  

Along with specialized medical team, Rotarian Abhijit Joag, President, Rotary Club of Pune South, Rotarian Vinod Agrawal, Project In-charge and Ms. Gouri Sardesai from Lokmanya HSS also accompanied the team. 

It may be noted that Endoscopic surgeries make many treatments easy, economical and less painful. However, Ethiopia doesn’t have enough skilled and experienced doctors to perform endoscopic surgeries. This camp will enable the patients to get these treatments done by highly skilled and well experienced Doctors from India.it is one of the basic reasons to conduct Endoscopic surgeries in Ethiopia.

Ethiopian Consulate in Mumbai has helped in visas as well as connecting us with St. Paul’s Hospital as a venue for the camp. We are happy that we stood by the needy patients on Global platform in Ethiopia. It is our major Golden Jubilee project and always ensured for helping good social cause”.   

Joag further added “Rotary Club of Pune South is doing this camp together with Lokmanya HSS, India’s renowned hospital for special surgeries. They have provided specialist surgeons for the camp and have also borne the cost”. 

Joag further elaborated that “Lokmanya HSS has state-of-the-art infrastructure and experience in conducting special surgeries. Dr. Narendra Vaidya, who heads Lokmanya Hospital. He is a world-renowned expert in Orthopedics and is the first surgeon outside USA to perform robot assisted knee replacement. Patients from all over the world, including Africa come to Lokmanya hospitals for various specialized treatments”.

Demeke Atnafu Ambulo, Consul General of Ethiopia in Mumbai said “We are thankful to Rotary Club of Pune South which is doing this camp together with Lokmanya Hospital for coming out to help needy patients in Ethiopia. It is a noble cause and government of Ethiopia is very happy about their noble gesture. We are thankful for kind support from Rotary club of Pune South and Dr Narendra Vaidya headed Lokmanya hospital
