In just one year as the Ethiopian Ambassador to India, H.E. Demeke Atnafu Ambulo has made significant strides in strengthening diplomatic, economic, and cultural ties between the two nations. His tenure, though brief, has been marked by an impressive array of accomplishments that have set a new standard for bilateral relations.
Ambassador Atnafu’s focus on economic diplomacy was evident in the organization of 27 business and investment forums across major Indian cities, collaborating with 17 chambers of commerce and industry. These efforts culminated in six business delegations to Ethiopia, comprising 139 Indian companies, fostering direct economic engagement between the two countries.
Cultural diplomacy was another cornerstone of his mission, with seven tourism and cultural promotion programs organized. These included Ethiopian cultural shows in various Indian states, showcasing the rich heritage of Ethiopia to Indian audiences.
In the field of education, Ambassador Atnafu established connections with over 20 Indian universities, facilitating institutional cooperation with 10 of them. This initiative paves the way for knowledge exchange and academic collaboration between Ethiopia and India.
His media engagement was equally impressive, with active participation in more than 25 media outlets, ensuring that Ethiopia’s voice was heard across India’s diverse media landscape.
Prior to his ambassadorial role, H.E. Demeke Atnafu served as Consul General in Mumbai for three and a half years, including during the challenging pandemic period. His tenure there was marked by efforts to simplify consulate rules and attract Indian businesses to Ethiopia. His initiatives led to the establishment of the Indo-Ethiopian Chamber of Commerce in Mumbai, a testament to his commitment to fostering bilateral trade relations.
Ambassador Atnafu’s achievements in such a short span demonstrate his diplomatic acumen and dedication to enhancing Ethiopia-India relations. As he moves on to his new posting in Kenya, he leaves behind a legacy of strengthened ties and a solid foundation for future cooperation between Ethiopia and India.
