Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has eloquently highlighted the profound historical and cultural connections that have existed between India and China for centuries. He emphasized that both nations have made remarkable contributions to global development and progress over the years. Acknowledging that there may be differences between the two countries, he firmly stated the importance of ensuring that competition remains peaceful and does not escalate into conflict. “For centuries, India and China have learned from each other. We must ensure that differences don’t become disputes,” Modi affirmed.
China has warmly welcomed Prime Minister Modi’s positive and forward-looking remarks regarding the strengthening of India-China relations during his interview on the Lex Fridman podcast. In response to Modi’s statements, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that fostering a cooperative relationship between the “elephant and the dragon” is the most viable and beneficial path for both nations moving forward.
Mao Ning further highlighted the constructive meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan, Russia, in October 2024. She noted that since that meeting, both countries have made significant strides in enhancing exchanges and achieving positive outcomes. Mao reiterated the importance of India and China partnering in each other’s success, drawing upon their 2,000-year history of amicable cooperation and shared civilizational progress.
Regarding the issue of border tensions, Modi reassured that both India and China are actively working toward restoring conditions to the status quo that existed before 2020. While he acknowledged that rebuilding trust and stability will take time, he stressed the necessity of employing multi-tiered diplomatic mechanisms to ensure a fair, just, and enduring resolution to the challenges at hand.
As India and China celebrate 75 years of diplomatic ties, Mao stated that China is fully committed to collaborating with India to implement key agreements and advance the relationship on a path of stability and mutual cooperation. Prime Minister Modi also underscored that in the 21st century, a strong, responsible, and harmonious India-China relationship is crucial for the peace, prosperity, and stability of the global community.
