Good News: India-China Direct Air Connectivity to Resume Soon; Final Dates Awaited

By Mewati Sitaram

In a key step toward restoring air connectivity between India and China, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) is engaged in discussions with Chinese counterparts to resume direct flights between the two countries. The flights, which had been suspended following the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent diplomatic tensions arising from the border standoff, have remained halted for nearly five years.

Vumlunmang Vualnam, Secretary, Ministry of Civil Aviation, Government of India, confirmed the development, stating, “Discussions have started. The Ministry of External Affairs and their counterparts in China have reached an in-principle agreement to resume direct flights.” He further added, “We would like all the requirements of our carriers to be fully met, and under the guidance of the MEA, we will make it happen.”

The first indication of potential resumption came earlier this year after India’s Deputy National Security Adviser, Vikram Misri, visited China. Following the visit, the MEA had announced that both nations had agreed “in principle” to restart direct air services.

It may be noted that Chinese Consul General in Kolkata, Xu Wei, also echoed similar sentiments last month, noting that both sides are in regular dialogue and preparations are ongoing to commemorate the 75th anniversary of India-China diplomatic relations. “The spring of China-India relations is arriving,” he remarked.

Direct flights between India and China have long played a vital role in fostering business, tourism, academic exchanges, and cultural ties. The resumption of services is expected to significantly improve ease of travel and boost bilateral engagement between the two Asian giants.
