Sri Lanka, one of India’s most cherished and nearest travel destinations, has unveiled a renewed focus on destination weddings, inviting Indian couples to celebrate their special day amid the island’s stunning natural and cultural backdrops. The initiative was formally launched at a showcase hosted at the ITC Grand Central Hotel in Mumbai, positioning Sri Lanka as a premier choice for unforgettable wedding celebrations.
The event commenced with the traditional lamp-lighting ceremony led by Her Excellency Priyanga Wickramasinghe, Consul General of Sri Lanka in Mumbai, Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau, SriLankan Airlines Manager Suman, along with other dignitaries.
The showcase brought together leading Sri Lankan hotels, resorts, heritage venues, and wedding service providers, creating a collaborative platform with India’s top wedding planners, travel agents, and media representatives. Attendees enjoyed networking sessions, immersive presentations, and customised concepts that showcased Sri Lanka’s unique ability to host both traditional Indian weddings and modern luxury ceremonies. During the event, cultural performances were also organised and widely cherished by all attendees, adding vibrancy to the celebration.
Buddhika Hewawasam, Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau said, “Sri Lanka is now open for destination weddings, and we invite India to come celebrate love with us. The overwhelming response across India reaffirmed our belief that Sri Lanka holds a special place in the hearts of Indian couples. From pristine beaches and tea garden retreats to colonial mansions and heritage forts, the island offers everything needed to create weddings that are truly unforgettable.”
In her address, Consul General Priyanga Wickramasinghe reflected on the deeper meaning of destination weddings, saying, “As Mark Twain observed, ‘one must travel to learn,’ and Ibn Battuta reminded us that travel transforms us into storytellers. A wedding in Sri Lanka embodies both—celebration and discovery—allowing couples not only to exchange vows in breathtaking settings but also to return as storytellers of our island’s beauty, heritage, and hospitality.”
The event also highlighted the rising demand for boutique and intimate weddings among Indian couples. With curated packages and bespoke offerings, Sri Lanka Tourism demonstrated its readiness to meet these evolving preferences, blending natural beauty, cultural richness, and luxury with affordability. The strong participation of Sri Lankan and Indian stakeholders underscored the potential of cross-border wedding tourism and reinforced Sri Lanka’s appeal as a destination where love and heritage unite seamlessly.
