The coastal city of Sanya came alive on 22 April 2026 in Sanya, Hainan, China as the 6th Asian Beach Games officially opened with a grand ceremony celebrating sport, culture, and the natural beauty of Hainan’s shoreline.
Set against the backdrop of the South China Sea, the inauguration ceremony transformed the beachfront arena into a glowing stage of lights, waves, and performances. Athletes from more than 40 countries marched proudly into the venue, greeted by cheers from thousands of spectators who had gathered along the coast.
The opening ceremony carried a strong oceanic theme, blending traditional cultural elements with modern visual technology. Performances highlighted the island’s maritime heritage, while large-scale projections and synchronized lighting effects turned the beach itself into a living canvas.
A symbolic torch lighting marked the official opening of the Games. In a unique twist, the final torch was jointly lit by multiple athletes, reflecting unity and cooperation among participating nations. The moment was met with loud applause and fireworks that lit up the night sky over Sanya Bay.
Chinese officials, along with representatives of the Olympic Council of Asia, emphasized the importance of the Games in strengthening regional sports ties and promoting beach and water sports across Asia. Organizers also highlighted Hainan’s growing role as a global tourism and sports destination.
Mascot “Yaya,” inspired by the endangered Eld’s deer, made several appearances during the ceremony, symbolizing environmental protection and the island’s biodiversity.
With competitions now underway, athletes will compete in 14 sports including beach volleyball, sailing, open water swimming, and beach handball over the coming days.
The Hainan Beach Games are scheduled to run until April 30, with thousands of athletes competing for medals under the sun, sand, and sea of one of Asia’s most scenic coastal regions.
