Maharashtra Governor and Chancellor of Universities Jishnu Dev Varma on Monday stressed that only one or two universities from the state currently figure in national rankings and this must change. He said cluster universities may be new, but their affiliated colleges are well established and reputed, and must work collectively to improve performance and visibility. Speaking at a review meeting of four cluster universities at Lok Bhavan, Mumbai, he called for focused efforts to strengthen academic outcomes.
The meeting was attended by vice-chancellors and senior officials from HSNC University, Dr. Homi Bhabha State University, Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil University and Warana University. He also highlighted the vision of Viksit Bharat and called for complete eradication of tuberculosis through active participation of universities. He urged institutions to involve students in TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyan through poster competitions, jingles in Marathi and Hindi, and awareness campaigns.
During presentations, universities showcased implementation of the National Education Policy, innovative courses, research projects, skill programmes, student enrolment and collaborations with global institutions. Officials said the review reflected a push for quality improvement and stronger accountability in higher education.
It was also decided that universities will expand outreach programmes focused on public health awareness, particularly tuberculosis elimination, while integrating innovative teaching methods and skill-based learning. The Governor encouraged institutions to build stronger industry linkages, promote research output, and enhance participation in national rankings frameworks to ensure long-term academic excellence and alignment with national development goals. Officials added that periodic reviews will continue going forward regularly conducted.
