When you talk about Switzerland, Zurich comes to mind instantly, one of the most beautiful Swiss cities. The city is one of the fountain richest cities in the world because it has more than 1200 drinking water fountains/sources spread within the city, which is part of the sustainability movement in Zurich. Drinking « Züri water » is good for us and our planet. It is the industrial, financial, and cultural center of the country. It is one of the most cosmopolitan and dynamic Swiss cities, if not even the world. Indeed, Zurich is worth visiting, the views alone – of the old, colorful architecture along the Limmat River, the snow-capped mountains in the distance, and serene Lake Zurich – are reason enough to visit this city. Dorothea Karl, Head of Markets & Convention Bureau, Zürich Tourism, highlighted the significance and uniqueness of Zurich, in conversation with Mewati Sitaram.

How important is Zurich in view of tourism?

Zürich is one of the most desired holiday destinations in Switzerland for people seeking relaxation, it is the gateway to Switzerland. It is at the core of a constantly expanding metropolitan area.  It is the industrial, financial, and cultural center of the country and one of the most cosmopolitan and dynamic Swiss cities. The city has more than200 direct flight connections that attract tourists from all across the globe. Zürich is more than an entry and exit destination. Here, tourists come to stay, explore Zürich, and then use Zürich as a hub to experience the rest of the country.

What are the famous places of tourist attractions for tourists in Zurich?

Zurich is blessed with an unmatched blend of picturesque and sensual natural beauty, known to have many popular tourist attractions. The lake, the river, the Uetliberg – our house mountain, picturesque old town, and squares dotted all over the city. For art lovers, we have excellent museums and galleries. Shopping enthusiasts will love the famous Bahnhofstrasse with international brands or shop till they drop into the new upcoming trend areas like Europaallee and Viadukt in Zürich West. Here many local designers have their base, which is the most sought-after place to visit.

Do theatres exist in Zurich?

Zurich has almost all the perfect destinations tourists look for. We have a variety of theatres, concert halls and not to forget our prestigious Opera House. This year we are celebrating Richard Wagner, who used to live in Zürich for nine years. Our creative scene attracts dancers, actors, musicians, and many more from all over the world.  Not only are we sharing space and an experience with the artists who are performing, but we are also sharing the experience with fellow audience members too, which makes Zurich an outstanding venue for art-loving tourists.

What is the latest highlight in Zurich one must have a glimpse of?

“May your life be filled, as mine has been, with love and laughter; and remember, when things are rough all you need is … Chocolate”. For those who are ardent lovers of Chocolate, this is a must. The Lindt Home of Chocolate has opened its doors in the autumn of 2021. It is now the largest chocolate museum in Switzerland with the largest chocolate shop in the world and a 9m high chocolate fountain. At the Lindt Home of Chocolate you will learn all about the art of making chocolate, and to round it up you get to taste chocolates as much as you like. This can`t be missed during your Zurich stay, which would have a unique experience of a lifetime.

What is the best way to get around Zurich?

For those who visit Zurich and would love to move around hassle-free tours in and around areas, I recommend getting yourself a Zurich Card. The Zurich Card includes unlimited 2nd class travel by tram, bus, train, boat, and cableway in the city of Zurich and the surrounding region. It also allows you for short boat trips and Limmat river cruises. It also offers free or concessional reduced admission to 43 museums, a 50% discount on the Zurich Old Town Walking Tour, and many more experiences. It is very economical and used by almost all the tourists.  For those who are looking for a Zurich card, visit https://www.zuerich.com/en/zurichcard. And don`t miss to download our Zürich City Guide App, where you can also purchase the Zürich Card. Also, I recommend following us on Instagram #visitzurich to get the latest tips on what to do during your stay.
