India’s Ambassador Gains Attention Through Mandarin-Language Outreach

By Sitaram Mewati

Six years after the Galwan Valley clash strained relations between India and China, India’s Ambassador to China, Vikram Doraiswami, is attracting attention in the country through his active engagement with Chinese audiences in their own language.

According to media reports, Doraiswami has been using Weibo, one of China’s most popular social media platforms, to communicate directly with Chinese citizens in fluent Mandarin. Through videos and online interactions, he has been sharing insights about India, its culture, people and the evolving relationship between the two Asian neighbours.

The ambassador’s outreach has generated interest among Chinese social media users and foreign policy observers, who view it as a significant example of modern public diplomacy. At a time when New Delhi and Beijing are working to stabilise ties following years of border tensions, such engagement is being seen as a constructive effort to promote greater understanding between the people of both countries.

Doraiswami is no stranger to China. A Mandarin speaker, he previously served in Hong Kong and Beijing during the early years of his diplomatic career, gaining first-hand experience of Chinese society, culture and politics. His familiarity with the language and local environment has helped him connect effectively with Chinese audiences and present India’s perspectives in a relatable manner.

The development comes as India and China continue diplomatic and military-level discussions aimed at improving communication and maintaining peace along the Line of Actual Control. Analysts believe that people-to-people outreach through digital platforms can complement official diplomacy and help build mutual trust.

Observers say Doraiswami’s growing presence on Chinese social media reflects the increasing importance of digital engagement in international relations and highlights a softer, more accessible dimension of diplomacy in the 21st century.
